Ultrafine‐Grained Laminated Metal Composites: A New Material Class for Tailoring Cyclically Stressed Components

The service life of technical components is often limited by the fatigue strength deployed materials. accumulative roll bonding (ARB) process, which has ability to produce ultrafine‐grained (UFG) laminated metal composites with tailored properties, offers a unique method significantly enhance materials that are cyclically loaded in three‐point bending. Detailed microstructural investigations reveal material‐ and load‐specific deformation damage mechanisms. Composites have sufficiently high difference between different constituent layers exhibit impeded crack growth therefore an extended at stress amplitudes compared those laminates rather similar constituents. In former composites, deflected material interface as it propagates from softer harder layer. At low amplitudes, prolonged mainly because increased resistance initiation. On one side, this result introduction UFG microstructure. other load transfer toward stiffer interior also accounts for enhanced life, if elastically dissimilar combined right manner.
